upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 or 12.10

Asked by parveen nasa

Dear Sir,

I want to upgrade my Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04 or 12.10.
My first question is - can I upgrade directly from 11.10 to 12.10?
In Update manager, it doesn't show upgrade option for Ubuntu version. It was showing it till recently when I updated the available updates (like for Mozilla etc.). Ater these updates, now option to upgrade Ubuntu version is not showing up.
Kindly suggest.

best regards,
parveen

You need to upgrade in stages, you cannot upgrade from 11.10 to 12.10 directly. The only time you can leapfrog releases is when you are upgrading from LTS to LTS (10.04 to 12.04).

You cannot upgrade 'Mozilla', Mozilla is a software team, they make products like Thunderbird and Firefox, you can upgrade Firefox and Thunderbird as they are software. Just like you can't upgrade 'Microsoft' but you can upgrade Microsoft Office 2003.

If it were me I would simply wipe Oneiric out and clean install Quantal, then restore user data from backup. It will give a cleaner OS with fewer issues.

If you really want to upgrade, you can make a Precise install media as you normally would and boot to it, you will be offered an upgrade option there. You can then do the same with Quantal. This takes a lot of data and a lot of time but it will get you to Quantal.

Hi parveen,

For that you have to enable the version update notification

open Update manager--> Settings--> select updates tab--> Notify me of a new version--> select for any New version

Now you can get the version updates also

Dear Rajesh,

I already have the option 'notify me of a new version' activated. But still it doesn't show the option to update the Ubuntu version.
As I wrote, it was showing it earlier, before I installed some of the other updates (like updates for mozilla firefox and other softwares) through 'Update manager'. But afterwards the option for updating Ubuntu version disappeared.
@ Actionparsnip, as you said 'If it were me I would simply wipe Oneiric out and clean install Quantal, then restore user data from backup. It will give a cleaner OS with fewer issues.'
Could you please tell me how to take back-up of whole system including all the data and settings.
Thank you very much both of you for your replies.

best regards,
parveen

To take backup you need to install "Ubuntu One" in your system..

By clicking it u can able to backup your system based on your needs.

let me know its helpfull or not

You should have a backup of your data anyway.... Just copy yourdata to a removable storage like a USB device.

Why do you not have a backup? Is your data not important to you? If your hard drive fails suddenly, where is your data?

Can you help with this problem?
