Unable to update or open any downloads in my Ubuntu 8.04
I am unable to go further with downloading any updates in the Update Manager as this is what comes up:
E: /var/cache/
Cannot update Mozilla Firefox and so download new version of MSN hotmail. Some downloads cannot be opened.

Please try this:
1. Open terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
2: Run this commands:
sudo aptitude clean
sudo aptitude autoclean
cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm libxcb-shape0.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install libxcb-shape0
sudo rm /var/lib/
sudo mkdir /var/lib/
sudo dpkg --clear-avail
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo aptitude install -f
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
3. Try to update

Support for Ubuntu 8.04 (desktop) ended on May 12, 2011.
Please install Ubuntu 10.04 or Ubuntu 11.04 to get updates...

Still cannot update. Followed your instructions - see below what I copied from terminal. Trying to run or update Firefox 6-0.1 tar.bz2 which is a zip drive sitting on my desktop. Thanks.

I have a Dell netbook with loaded Ubuntu 8.04. Do I still need to update to a current operating system and will it be free to download?
