Upgrading to 11.04 froze at Setting up udisks (1.0.2-4ubuntul) How do I get around this without losing data and settings

Asked by Tony Wilson

Started downloading the upgrade last night and the gave it the goad to upgrade this morning. Three items (can't remember what) could not upgrade but rest of upgrade continued to the point where the mouse and keyboard froze after stating :-
Setting up udisks (1.0.2-4ununtul) ...
Now unable to do anything.

What do I do next?

If I restart the machine will I lose everything and have a corrupt operating system or is there a work around?

Your advice would be appreciated.

Exact same issue here. Distribution Upgrade, 10.10 Desktop to 11.04 Desktop on a Dell Inspiron 700m, via the Updates Manager.

Under the progress bar: "Configuring gnome-session-bin." In the terminal window: "Setting up udisks (1.0.2-4ubuntu1) ..."

Same problem with me. With only three minutes remaining, my computer froze at setting up udisks. I have a desktop Compaq Presario SR1130NX

Please respond quickly. What should I do?

Same problem here. This post on the Ubuntu forums has one user's report that when they restarted the machine, Ubuntu was unbootable: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1743474

I was able to boot by selecting "Previous Linux versions" from the GRUB menu, and then choosing an older kernel version (2.6.35). The Unity shell appeared and I was able to complete the package upgrade process. Thus far nothing seems to be broken.

@chmmr -- good score! Same trick got me logged back in. I was warned I was getting only a "partial upgrade," but I can at least use the laptop again. I'll be wiping and re-installing from scratch, though. Thanks again!

I was able to beet into a previous version and continued with the upgrade. It also stated that I was only getting a partial upgrade. Most of my programs like Openshot won't work.

Like Angela I only got got a partial upgrade and have sent a bug report in. Have decided to save all my data to a spare HD and wipe my system and make a clean install. If this still shows problems I'll revert to the previous version as this was very stable and offered no problems.

Same problem here. Had Ubuntu installed in VMWare Fusion 3 on a Macbook Pro. Will just reinstall from scratch.

I had this problem. The machine came up fine on reboot and then I did

  sudo aptitude full-upgrade
  sudo dpkg --configure -a
  sudo aptitude full-upgrade

Seems OK now.
