I keep getting an alert icon on my menu bar about expired or unavailable repositories. How can I correct this problem?

Asked by Steven D. Shown

I keep getting an alert in the notification area of my panel that alerts me of outdated information. when I click on the icon and select "check for updates" I get an error message in my update manager that says
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

then in the information window below that I get this following information:

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

How can I get rid of the problem that keeps giving me this ongoing and annoying alert?

Go to System > Administration > Update Manager and click Settings... at the lower-left corner of the Update Manager window, which brings up the Software Sources window. Click on the Other Software tab. Now you can find the software sources that contain "nilarimogard" and/or "webupd" and uncheck them. If there are more than two such entries, please post again with details (as if you uncheck them all you may risk removing good, working software sources whilst removing the sources causing the problem).

This may leave some installed software unable to be updated, which could cause problems (for example, there might be important security or stability updates). There is a similar software source (https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/webupd8) -- perhaps that broken software source is the result of a typographical error when trying to add this software source, or maybe it's an older software source superseded by this one. You might want to enable the software source at https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/webupd8.

Thank you very much. This solved my problem, although I did have to examine every line to be absolutely sure that I was not disabling any good repositories. There were not any more than two such entries so everything worked out well.
