getting gnome classic desktop

Asked by nigel brown

I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I want to put gnome classic on my desktop as I am a complete novice. I tried to download it from ubuntu software centre. It seemed to download sucessfully but does not appear in my apps.( even these are hard to find on my current desktop with its column of symbols on the left). I just want a screen with applications, places and system in the top left corner so that I can follow instructions given in my book designed for idiots.

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Log off and select the new session from the login screen.

Brilliant, I had little bit of difficulty but I discovered I had to click on the little symbol to the right of my name in the box asking for password. This opened a box with a selection including classic desktop which I selected. Then I entered my password and after a pause the sort of desktop I want came up. One thing though, Applications and Places appear up in the top left corner when I move the mouse there, but there is no Systems. Why is this?

I now see that the lack of this word is not important so the situation is resolved

Hold SHIFT, ALT, CTRL or combinations and right click the panel. You should be able to add items. The session is a bit glitchy and if you prefer the old style session I suggest you use XFCE instead. This is also coded using GTK.
