upgraded to 12.04.1 and have no tool bar and many bugs, how do I go back to old version?

Asked by John Rianda

There is no tool bar, the folder icons show up and unless I click on one the screen goes black with two stripes of blue/white/black "static" at the bottom. The only way to get to the internet is by opening a folder and then going to "help" and clicking on "get help on line". Even with this way of going on line some times there is no ability to type into the web page. There is no tool bar to minimize or x out of the page and the only way to log out is ctrl/alt/delete and sometimes that doesnt even work. I think I don't have enough memory for this version and want to go back but don't even know what version I had before.

The only way to go back is to do a clean install of an older version wiping out your data in the process. So you would want to backup first so you can restore your old data.

However, before you do that you may want to try the Ubuntu Classic mode. Its like the old 10.4 desktop, though not identical.

To install open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter

sudo apt-get gnome-panel.

reboot and next time you login there is a small circular logo just to the right of the user name and above the text entry box for you password. Click on that and you will see a list of installed desktops select "Gnome Classic" before you enter your password. Give it a try.

If you are still not satisfied I would go for the latest release but with one of the lighter weight options. Older versions will not be supported for ever and once a new version is released the only updates tend to be security patches and real bugs. There are no more feature improvements. Once the product is End of Life you don't even get those

Kubuntu uses the the KDE desktop, Xubuntu is more similar to the old 10.04 Ubuntu both are faster and less resource hungry than the full Ubuntu and the lightest weight of them all is Lubuntu.

They can all be installed as desktops from the command line though personally I would go for a clean install. If you really want to install any of these desktops from the terminal we can tell you how.

The good thing about Ubuntu is that all versions are "try before you commit" Pick the one you like best and install it
