How can I remove Unity from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and I'm not really liking the Unity desktop. It's a little difficult having The Launcher, along the left-hand side of the screen and not being able to move the panels on the top, to the bottom. Is there a way I can stay on 12.04 LTS but remove Unity, and have all my panels that are on the top moved, to the bottom, like a normal computer would have? Thanks, your help is greatly appreciated.

You can install the Gnome 3 desktop:

If you are also unhappy with that, you should have a look at Linux Mint, it is based on Ubuntu but has an concept when it comes to the desktop UI or default software selection.

@Thomas: He didn't asked to provide a alternative he just want to know if he can remove unity. Why are you suggesting linux mint!? You should suggest him Xubuntu, kubuntu and lubuntu...

@Ravi: It is not my job to hold up the Canonical flag here. I provide solutions suitable to users. There are alternatives to what I propose, for sure. And you are free to propose any other solution. The Open Source system is a system of user choice not one of predefined ways.

Okay I figured out the answer to my question. I'm currently still using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS managed to remove the Unity desktop, and figured out how to move those panels down from the top of screen to the bottom of the screen. These are the instructions I followed. Hope it helps for someone else.

If you install Xubuntu, Kubuntu or Lubuntu, you won't even have Unity installed. Unity is also not a desktop, it is a shell for Gnome which is the destktop in Ubuntu and always has been.
