Desktop without apps or Unity

Asked by glasairman

I installed MATE onto Ubuntu 12.04.

I logged in OK but the desktop contained no icons EXCEPT an icon to "Computer" - no TERMINAL, apps, shutdown/logoff icon, NOTHING.....and ctrl-alt-T doesnt even do anything

So here I am unable to logoff. The only thing I can do maybe is try to find the terminal app by searching via "Computer", try to get sudo gedit going and change whatever file contains the details of my desktops available, or change to none-autologin

Where does the name of my chosen Desktop Manager reside?

Or does anyone hava a better idea how I can logoff and change back to Unity?
