Ubuntu 11.10 is unusable from a function standpoint

Asked by ChuckL

I installed U10.04 and was offered an online upgrade to U 11.10, which I took. after a few hours I was able to try the new system. The problems that I found are first off, I was not able to find the Gnome window manager, second, every time that I move a window id bounces like it is on springs.

When I installed 11.04, I was warned that my video would not function with Unity window manager, and it was not activated. That did not occur with11.10.

So, how do I return to the Gnome window manager? (The log in screen no longer gives me a choice.)
Among the problems with Unite are that it resembles Microsoft Windows way too much. Like Windows, it requires too many key clicks to do anything. I am also unable to find how to open a window or application with only one click.

The more I see of these upgrades, the more I believe that I should refuse them in the future and just reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and change systems in 2013 when the support runs out.

I want to use my computer, NOT play with it.

I used IBM's WARP 4.0 without changes until serenity Systems introduced eComStation well after IBM threw out home users. IT JUST WORKED. I wish that IBM would bring it back, but as they sell service, not broken operating systems, that is not going to happen.

Don't get me wrong. I would be very happy with Linux, if I could keep my applications and system settings when I upgrade my OS, but there needs to be a clear and well written instruction set on exactly how to do this. Ideally, this could be done by installing the OS in one partition and the applications and documents in another. The Disk Utility should determine and display the OS in each partition reported.

Be sure you have an active connection (prefer wire if you have wire and wireless)

Open a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+t
if doesn't work press ctrl+alt+f1 and made login with your user and password, then type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get -f upgrade
sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install unity-2d
sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

At boot before to login click on the gear-wheel icon and choose unity-2d or something like this i don't remeber well now and try.

There's no classic GNOME (version 2.x) in Ubuntu 11.10; if you wish, you can use the fallback mode of GNOME 3 (which resembles classic mode) after installing it:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
Log out and select "GNOME Classic" in the login screen.

Can you help with this problem?
