No launch botton(s) after updating to 11.04
After having updated to 11.04 I simply lost access to my PC. My old picture on the desktop appeared, but the "normal" features on the top and bottom of the screen with various icons for Firefox, calculator, shut down, network, bluetooth and worst of all APPLICATIONS, PLACES AND SYSTEM, i.e features to use the computor, no longer is visible!!!
How to I proceed?

Thanks for a VERY fast reply. However, your suggestion does not solve my problem.
First, I am not able to log out in the "prescribed" manner, i.e. by clicking on an icon, which then offers several options - like hibernate, restart or shut down.. I cant see ANY icon: Neither at top, the bottom or left or right. Therefore, i n order to "log" out I have force the computer to stop by pressing the switch n button above the keyboard.
Second, I am able to log in by using my name used in the version of ubuntu before I updated to 11.04.
Third. After login I cant see where at the bottom I can find gnome classic.
Fourth. T reiterate. On my desktop, on my screen the only thing I can see is the picture I used as desktop background before updating.
Conclusion. I'm still in dire straits.

Hello actionparsnip
Please be patient with an absolute novice. In my book we are back to square one.
What - in lays terms please- did the output from my terminal tell us?
How do I log into Gnome classic???
To reiterate. On my screen I see NOTHING but my old desktop photograph. When right clicking on the desktop, I am presented with 4 options:
Create folder
Create Launcher
Organise Desktop by Name
Change Desktop Background
When clicking on the last option a new window appears providing three items: Theme, Background & Fonts
In Theme I get the choice between Ambiance, Clear looks, Dust, etc. . BUT NO GNOME CLASSIC ??
Now what?

If you have your computer set so that it logs in automatically (you don't have to provide a user and password before the desktop appears) then open a terminal (CTL+ALT+T) and run
gdmsetup
unlock the window that appears, change from login automatically to choose the user, and change to Ubuntu Classic as the default session. Restart, enter your password, and you should be back at your familiar desktop.

My thanks to Smitten
No, I havenot set my computer so that it logs in automatically. I log on with mbh01 followed by a password.
Anyway, I tried you advice.
Here is what the terminal gave of output:
mbh01@mbh-ZEPTO:~$ sudo gdmsetup
[sudo] password for mbh01:
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: init delay=30
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: "/usr/share/
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: "/usr/share/
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: Init default session found:'xsession'
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: Failed to identify the current session: Unable to lookup session information for process '1820'
** (gdmsetup:1820): WARNING **: Unable to find users: no seat-id found
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: explicitly skipping user: nobody
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: user icon changed
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: adding monitor for '/home/mbh01/.face'
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: Getting list of sessions for user 1000
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: Found 1 sessions for user mbh01
** (gdmsetup:1820): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: not adding session on other seat: /org/freedeskto
mbh01@mbh-ZEPTO:~$
I could NOT unlock the window that presented itself.
To me its more & more mysterious : Does it make any sense to you?

Ok, if you are entering a password before logging in...
After you enter your password, but before clicking the Login button, look at the very bottom of your screen. You should see a drop down box containing the word Ubuntu. Change that to Ubuntu Classic, then click login.

THANK VERY MUCH. YOUR LAST INPUT SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!
Lesson learned___ always check the small print at the bottom of the contract or in this case the bottom of the login screen.
