[Natty] Where do I find places and connect to a server?

Asked by Anders Wallenquist

I'm new to Unity, but have been using Gnome for a long time. One of the most important features for me are the "connect to a server"-dialog. In Unity I feel lost not finding "places", my bookmarks and "connect to a server"-dialog. At out office we use Ubuntu servers for file store using GVFS and SSH/SFTP, when working with clients we also use SSH/SFTP to their servers.

Have I not found the right method to do the same thing in Unity, am I looking under wrong icons/menues?

How do I run Nautilus "as normal", staring from a terminal window? Are there any fast start like alt-f2 or someting?

You can add the ALT+F2 functionality again, you can run run it from the folder icon in the Unity bar. This launches the default file browser, nautilus

Found it thank you, its confusing with two filehandler applications and mouse over to see the application menu was also a bit confusing before you got a hang of it.

I also couldn't find this right away and had to search for it.
This was anything but obvious. I suggest that this should be made easier to find again.

@Freyr
Do you have a specific I idea as to how it ought to be changed, so that it is easier to find? Natty's interface freeze is past, so such a change is very unlikely to happen in Natty, but depending on the extent and specificity of your idea, you could post the feature request by filing a bug here on Launchpad (make sure to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully first) or posting on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com, and your concern might be addressed in o-series (the release after Natty). If you post about your idea here, I can advise as to the most appropriate way to draw developer attention to it.

How about a simple "Connect to Server" icon in the internet section of applications? That way you can use the new "fast search" feature and get instant access. It really is incredibly difficult to find for such an important feature!
