swappiness default value on desktop os version (up to 12.10)

Asked by Sergey Golub

vm swappiness default value on desktop 12.10 is 60. However in this article https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq#What_is_swappiness_and_how_do_I_change_it.3F it's recommended to 10, and 60 is for server version. Can we split values for server/desktop versions?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs.

Hi Sergey Golub,

the swappiness value depends on how much physical RAM you have. If you have enough , then you can decrease the value to 10 , but if you don't have enough it is better to leave it as it is.

So you understand that Ubuntu developers cannot set a value of 10 , by default. Some desktops have not enough RAM to support this value.

You can set it as you wish but lower end systems benefit from a slightly higher swappiness. I don't recommend this be changed and many non-technical users who aren't even aware of what vm.swappiness is or does or even exists use Ubuntu quite happily.

Can you help with this problem?
