Are you trying to install Ubuntu using a USB stick?

If so this documentation may help you:

yes, i tried to download to a stick not from a stick. nothing seems to work or even open. if this is any indication of how user friendly this is..........well,
that link above is not relevant i think......

the ISO is the file you downloaded from the Ubuntu site. How are you transferring the data to the USB device (you don't download an already downloaded file to a USB stick, you are simply copyinig it)

1. download the ubuntu .iso file to your harddrive. there will be instructions on the ubuntu download pages BELOW the download link that tells you how to install the .iso file onto a usb stick. follow those instructions. as in the instructions, the easiest is to go to www.pendrivelinux.com and download the installer program (as opposed to unetbootin which a lot of people suggest)

2. once the .iso file is installed on the stick, boot off the usb stick. that is, you'll need to turn off your computer then back on. when it comes on, press either ESC, F1, F2, F10, F11, or F12. which key you press depends on they key that is used to select boot device your. you can determine which key it is by trial and error, or look in your computer manual. make sure you plug the usb stick in BEFORE you turn on the computer. select booting off the usb stick.

TADA!

Using a USb stick is one way to install Ubuntu, as well as CD etc. You don't extract the file and copy the data using a file manager to make a bootable USB, you need software like unetbooting which is available on Linux, Mac and Windows and will setup the device properly for you.
