tzdata update - too often update ?

Asked by Manson Thomas

Hi,

Why is there so much tzdata update ?

I can't figure out why... my servers do not travel that much and quite stay in the same time zone... and like forever... ;)

Preparing to replace tzdata 2009n-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 (using .../tzdata_2009o+repack-0ubuntu0.8.10.2_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement tzdata ...
Setting up tzdata (2009o+repack-0ubuntu0.8.10.2) ...

Current default timezone: 'Europe/Paris'
Local time is now: Tue Oct 27 10:37:08 CET 2009.
Universal Time is now: Tue Oct 27 09:37:08 UTC 2009.
Run 'dpkg-reconfigure tzdata' if you wish to change it.

Apticron reports allways the same version to update (but description changes) :

tzdata 2009n-0ubuntu0.8.10.1

and

tzdata 2009n-0ubuntu0.9.04.1

Regards,
Thomas.

Hi Manson,

tzdata contains timezone information for all timezones, not just yours. And yes, it needs to be updated regularly as local rules around the world change. Also, it contains historical timezone data that is constantly improved upon. If you're interested in this sort of thing, there was a good article on BoingBoing a few days ago: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/10/25/on-the-literary-and.html
