When are you planning to replace outdated and buggy ttf-indic-fonts with fonts-indic ?
Baseline : ttf-indic-fonts is not updated after 2010 . Debian moved to fonts-<foundryname> based package naming in 2010 and migrated to fnts-indic and subpackages . Ubuntu still keeps 2010 version of ttf-indic-fonts as sub packages as main fonts in each language pack and breaking native language rendering for 1.3 billion people .
Open type specification changes and rise of harfbuzz as a new rendering engine resulted in a lot of fixes on indian language font , but after many requests Ubuntu is respecting this . Now ubuntu have duplicate set of fonts for many languages . fonts-smc and ttf-malayalam-fonts contains same set of fonts but different versions. Expected Result :
1. Changing ttf-indic-fonts and its installer and language package dependencies to fonts-indic and its sub packages in debian for 15.04 . Please move these packages to main repo from universe
2. For Languages like Malayalam , please take updated fonts from this official SMC PPA https:/
