torrenting how-to

I've got my connection back! :)

Now i just need to work out about torrenting and how to host or otherwise help make the torrent download faster for a few files a friend hosts. I do occasionally reboot or have my machine off so it's not a completely reliable connection, also i'm using Transmission 1.34 and am clueless about torrenting and all that. Is there a handy how-to guide?

I gather it's possible to be a "seed" host but that it might be better if just help my friend's "seed". Sorry i am completely baffled about this

As you occasionally reboot or switch off, I recommend you to do not install additional software for torrenting.
Just keep Transmission opened as long as you can and you will helping your friend.

In bittorrent terminology, a seed is just some peer that has completed a download but keeps uploading files to others peers that hasn't completed download. Seeds come and go. You don't have to be always on to be a seed.
The more seeds, the better downloading speed will be.

You can also help seeding without having complete a download. If a download holds more than a file, you can select in Transmission which ones do you want to download and then you will be seeding just that part of the download.

Thanks for your answer Daniel :) I tried the link but it went to an unwritten page. However while i was there i used the handy search tool and got
