transmission bit torrent client opens when you want to download torrent files from torrent sites e.g here is a list with the top 35 - http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/peersharing/a/torrent_search.htm

When you will click on a torrent file automatically then in your browser you will asked with what you will want to download the file. You will choose to open it with bit torrent transmission. After that the file will start automatically to be downloaded to your hd.

Hope this helped

Why you don't install Wine using the Ubuntu repositry...?

To install wine in Ubuntu

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wine

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then there are a lot of howto on the net:
