My ISP does not seem to allow torrents. How exactly do you use a proxy with transmission?
Under Edit>Preferences>Proxy I have to choose a port too. Would this be the same as the port I use for incoming connections?
Finally, is there any noticeable difference between HTTP types and SOCKS types?

You choose the type which the proxy you select is made to accept, you don't pick and choose. The port is also defined by your chosen proxy.

Thank you for your answer. I selected the port according to the proxy. Torrents seem to work now, however they are painfully slow. Is this due to the proxy or to the network? Is there some work around I could try? I have no access to the router though.

If its a public proxy then you will find it is very busy, explaining the slowness.
