Can't play dvd.

Asked by buurd

Binary package hint: totem

Says it can't open the disc and refers to the permissions.. When I check the permissions I see that it has read and execute for all users on the system. The disk is recogized in the system and I can browse the files on disk so I don't belive that the dvd-player (hardware) is not broken.

This is the first DVD i try to play in the system but I have installed the support for divx earlier.

Best regards
Roland

Did you install the medibuntu repo? It allows you to install libdvdcss2 which enables you to play protected DVDs. This might help you out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Just tried it out myself and it worked.

The medibuntu seemed to get VLC working. But mediaplayer hangs with 20% cpu-load. Seems like Ubuntu has not got better in handling DVD if the build in help can't point you in the correct direction.

add the medibuntu repos then run:

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

Then you can play DVD to your hearts content.

If VLC or Totem doesn't work, and you want to watch dvd movies or downloaded flv video files in Ubuntu,
Google for "flv flash Totem internal data stream vlc undf"
... it's better to install everything in 32 bit, even if you have a 64 bit machine, as there are something missing in 64 bit depository like drivers, codecs,...
