I don't know how I can link subtitels with the film.

Do somebody know how I should link subtitels with the film?

 - Automatic external subtitle load, or manual (only on the command-line, use like: totem file:///file.avi#subtitle:file.srt)

So if it's not working right now, and you have both the .avi and the .srt in lets say /home/Docho/ the command might be
totem file:///home/Docho/movie.avi#subtitle:subtitle.srt or something similar to that.

If you cannot make it work, tryout VLC media player which most probably will be able to play your file how you want it.

I would also like to point out that totem-xine and totem-gstreamer, may give different results. If you prefer totem as a movie player, you should probably check out totem-xine for your subtitle-issue.

Other than that: I support Isak Frants recommendation of VLC - as it is a very complete, feature-rich, user-friendly movie-player.

and remember the subtitle file must have the same name as the movie file

Because of hearing loss a friend of mine has to rely on subtitles. We use the VLC player together with srt files and are very satisfied with it. To correct the last posting it is not necessary that the subtitle file has the same name, it may even be located in a different directory or disk, just give the file name. Furthermore with VLC you can link the subtitles with the movie into one single file.
