not given the option to choose vlc multimedia plugin for mms

I have been trying to play mms videos in Firefox but when I go to the preferences for Firefox I am not given the option to choose vlc multimedia plugin to handle to file. I don't know where to find it and it is not coming up on the list of apps to handle mms. Ubuntu's default media player will not play mms either. Any assistance would be appreciated.
