Totem could not play 'vcd://'

When trying to play a VCD, here is the pop-up message I get:

     Totem could not play 'vcd://'.

     No URI handler implemented for "vcd".

Also, when playing an AVI file, I have audio - but no video.

I installed the extra GStreamer files (Add/Remove) in hopes it would be fixed, but it still didn't work.

I have the same error message with Totem for VCD. Likewise I installed extra GStreamer libraries to no avail. The VCDs play fine in MPlayer or (g)xine. I too would like to solve this problem.

I'm surprised that this didn't work "out of the box" like it should have, as this is Gnome's answer to Microsoft's Media Player.

Like you, I have been using MPlayer to play VCDs, although I get an error message with this too. It says "ioctl dif1: Invalid argument". I have no idea what this is, so I just click "OK" and continue with the video.

I considered finding out how to use MPlayer as the default program to run when inserting a VCD, but I would rather use Totem as the default player. Also, MPlayer doesn't play the video part of AVI files, which is the same problem I have with Totem.

Hopefully this problem will be resolved in the near future.

Hi, this is related to bug 43589. To work around this issue you can install totem-xine which uses the same multimedia programming as gxine, but keeps the totem graphical program.

Specifically (on ubuntu 6.06)

 * install package ui-xine
 * insert VCD in drive
 * open a terminal window
 * run this command: "xine vcd://"

I found xine-ui and installed it. I followed instructions, but it didn't work. Here is what I get:

This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
xine: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.1/xineplug_inp_vcd.so: undefined symbol: vcdinfo_get_seg_resolution

does this means that watching vcds in 606 is impossible with totem?

There is no problem with the DVDs in totem. But when it comes to VCD, it gives the error message, "you might not have permission to open the file."

When you run the command in terminal: totem vcd://0 or 1 or 2, it plays the VCD !

Probably modifying the command line in the appropriate file to include the VCD (alongwith DVD) may do the trick. But I do not know how to do it. Somebody who is a linux wizard can give me the answer.
