totem package

Totem will play movies but not episodes

Hi,

Sorry if this question has already been asked before. I'm new to Ubuntu and am trying to get Totem movie player to play dvd's. After following the help files I installed libdvdnav4, libdvdread4, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly packages. I also ran the terminal and entered sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh.
This has allowed me to play DVD movies and some series. However, several series do not work, either not opening the menu at all or crashing during episode playback.

Has anyone else experienced this or suggest any fixes? Please be aware that I am new to Ubuntu and may need some simple explanations. Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Have you tried other apps like vlc or gnome-mplayer?

I wasn't sure what alternatives there were or if they were any better than Totem. Which would you recommend to try first, and will I also need to configure them? Thank you for your quick response.
