plugin for viewing *a.avi files

Hi ppl
I just installed my Ubuntu OS on my super duper computer at home. Now, I wish to see a *.avi movie. The application tells me that I need to install some plugin.
Question : where can I learn more about plugins for my media player and how to install them?
