Deleting a tab in Thunderbird causes the program to grey and be unusable for several minutes
When I double click on an email in Thunderbird, Thunderbird (correctly) puts a copy of that email in a new tab.
But when I delete the new tab, Thunderbird greys; it makes extensive use of the hard disk, causing a large whirling sound, for two or three minutes, before Thunderbird returns to normal (not greyed out).
As a result, my Thunderbird is very difficult to use, and is putting far too much demand on the computer.
In fact, just single clicking on an email (to read it) often causes Thunderbird to grey, and to whirl the hard disk, for
a minute.
Something must be wrong with my Thunderbird.
I've tried;
sudo apt-get install --reinstall Thunderbird -- this did not help.
Help much appreciated.

Try to re-install again , but this time make sure that you will purge Thunderbird and delete .thunderbird hidden folder.
Execute bellow commands with order. Copy-paste from here for more accuracy , one line at time.
~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge thunderbird
~$ rm -r .thunderbird/
~$ sudo apt-get install thunderbird
BE AWARE that with above commands all your thunderbird settings will be lost.
Thanks

Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem.
I purged Thunderbird, deleted .thunderbird and all its subdirectories --
but Thunderbird did not work properly.
Again, if I double clicked on an email, it opened up in a new tab --
nothing wrong with that. But, if I deleted the new tab, and clicked
on any email, Thunderbird again greyed out, was unusable, and made my hard
disk whirl for a long time before it calmed down.
Ny wife has a windows machine -- Thunderbird works perfectly on that. (I
tried exactly the smae thing -- no greying out, no whirling hard disks, no
delay to usability. Same on a Mackintosh at my place of work.
So something is wrong with Thunderbird on my computer.
Help and advie much appreciated.

Dear NikTh,
I apologize: You were basically correct. I found, however, in addition to
sudo apt-get remove --purge thunderbird
rm -rf .thunderbird
I also had to do
rm -rf /etc/thunderbird
Then, a re-installation:
sudo apt-get install thunderbird
Produced what seems to be a fully correctly working thunderbird.
(BTW, i didn't lose all my data -- before I removed everything, I exported
all of my address books as .ldif files; I then simply imported them after
re-installing. Evidently, there had been something very wrong in
/etc/thunderbird; not anymore!

Hi again nick-athens30!
I'm afraid I was wrong -- Thunderbird still has the same erratic behavior:
Double clicking on an email puts a copy of it into what I have been calling a new tab -- actually, it's a new window, located slightly to the right of the original. (Thunderbird on my wife's Windows computer does the same thing.) However, if I delete this window,
and then click on any email, thunderbird still greys out, and whirls using a lot of hard disk space for a long time. (That doesn't happen on my wife's Windows computer).

Weird problem.
What thunderbird version you have ? and what Ubuntu version & kernel ?
~$ lsb_release -rcd ; uname -r
~$ apt-cache policy thunderbird
I have thunderbirnd and work every day with it. Can handles over 200 messages per day without problems. I did what you did , (with open message to a new tab) but thunderbird not greyed out. Worked as it should.
Thanks

Maybe this information will help:
I purged thunderbird again, and downloaded the most recent tarfile from Mozilla, Wasn't any better. Here are some of the error messages it generates, when loaded from a terminal:

No ,no tar file from mozilla's site
Try to install the latest - beta version from mozilla's official PPA , here in lauchpad.
Purge - remove everything related to thunderbird and then do
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam
~$ sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install thunderbird
This will install thunderbird 17. See if is better.
If not , then we have to focus somewhere else.

Unfortunately, thunderbird 17 beta was not better; it appeared to need more than two clicks in an email to launch a new tab; but when the tab was deleted, the same problem if one clicked in an email.

Dear Nikki,
The command
cat .xsessions-errors
produced the result: cat: No such file or directory.
The output of the the second command:
cat /var/log/
is contained in the attached file "errorfile".
Thanks for your continued aid.

Hi ,
paste the result of commands to http://
and give here the link(s). I think you cannot attach a file here. This is not a bug , but an answer tracker.
The file name is .xsession-errors , not .xsessions-errors. Try to copy-paste the commands from here to terminal (for more accuracy)
Thanks

Thanks, NikkiThe output of
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -e WW -e EE
is:
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

The output of
cat .xsession-errors
is huge. I saved it to a file; I tried pasting the output into the paste
window that suggested, but
at the rate of one screenful at a time, realized that it would take months.
The only way I can think of to send it as an attachment to a file -- or by
ssh.
I'll attach it to this note, as the file cat-.xsessions-
(The file -- attached to this email -- is about 1.5 megabytes of text).
I could also send it by scp, if you want to give me an email address to
send it to, and a temporary password to send it.
Or, I'll send it any other way that i can.

You can do this
~$ > .xsession-errors
This will clear up all the contents of .xsession-errors file . Probably there stored old errors ... etc, and file is too big.
Then reboot , open thunderbird via terminal
~$ thunderbird
and paste the results of .xsession-errors and terminal messages (especially when stuck) at the pastebin I gave you.
Also you can try to delete your profile or the default profile and see if this helps
~$ thunderbird -P
This will open a window with thunderbird profiles , delete them all.
Thanks

Hi Nikki!
I executed > .xsession-errors,
then rebooted, and opened thunderbird in a terminal.
(I first executed thunderbird -P and deleted all profiles.)
I configured thunderbird as I always do.
.xsession-errors was large, and I hadn't done anything yet with thunderbird; so I deleted it. (Maybe a mistake).
The terminal outup was large.
I then did what causes the problem: Double clicked on an email message, which brought it up in a new tab.
I then deleted the tab, and clicked on a message.
Thunderbird greyed out, as usual, and remained unusable -- making the hard disk work hard -- for a while.
I pasted the part of the terminal output relevant to the problem sequence into the pastebin.
I looked at .xsession-errors. It had size zero; nothing to paste.
So I submitted what was in the pastebin (the portion of the terminal output that occurred during the problem).
I hope that this may be useful in finding the problem.
Please let me know if I should redo some or all of this differently -- and
thanks for your help.
(Note: While the problem is continuing, I am not using Thunderbird for email. I'm using zimbra mail on a browser for my work email (z.rochester.edu). So thunderbird, as it is now setup, will not be used until trying a solution, or for more investigatory work. In fact, I will shut it down now (not deleting what profile it created), as it uses much computer resources as it dowloads old messages..
Thanks much for yoru help,

Dear Nikki,
I decided to try something that might give more information: IT DID.
I have been using Thunderbird to access my University of Rochester email --
my University of Rochester email is slubkin@
mail account that the problem occurs.
I setup a second email program on Thunderbird: My gmail account -- the one
I'm using now -- which uses the email
address <email address hidden>.
Interestingly, when I double click on a gmail email, again Thunderbird
opens it in a new tab -- but when I delete the tab, and click on another
mail in gmail (through Thunderbird), ther eis no problem.
So it appears that the problem has something to do with the use of
Thunderbird to access my University of Rochester email:
slubkin@
Rochester switched to using zimbra email exclusively about the time that my
problems started with Ubuntu Thunderbird).
But, I should point out, Thunderbird on Windows has no trouble with my
z.rochester.edu account; neither does Thunderbird on the Macintosh. So it
appears to be a problem limited to Thunderbird on Ubuntu, and apparently
only when accessing my university of Rochester zimbra email:
slubkin@
Evidently some strange inconsistency between Ubuntu Thunderbird and
z.rochester.edu zimbra email.

Some additional information: Update Manager sent a new linux kernel,
together with a new Thunderbird. I installed all new updates (so I'm using
a new release of Ubuntu).
Unfortunately, no change in the behavior of Thunderbird: Works perfectly
when using the email address <email address hidden>, but the same bad
behavior when using the account slubkin@

Dear Nikki,
.xsession-errors had size 4k, so I pasted it's contents into the Pastebin
that you sent me.
It looks like some of the information there may be relevant.

OK ,
this seems to me as a bug with the glib library
(thunderbird:2786): GLib-GObject-
Searched and found this => http://
but no solution there.
You can close the question (solved) and open a bug and we will see what developers would say.
Thanks

Hi Nikki!
But that doesn't explain why Ubuntu thunderbird behaves properly when it's
used to access my account: <email address hidden>,
but has the glib problem when accessing the email account

This solved my problem: There is a known bug in current Ubuntu Glib that
is the source of the problem.

I had a power failure -- clicked on the wrong option when the system
returned. It then allowed me to login merely as a "guest". I loaded the
newest version of Ubuntu, choosing to not keep any default options.
When I restarted the system, it did not allow input; a message such as
"Invalid input" appeared; and the only logins dislplayed (butr unusuable)
were as "guest" or "remote login" (neiother of which worked).
I currently have a rescue CD booted, and the root filesystem of my computer
mounted on /mount on the CD. I can edit any files on the hard disk
(everything is in the root partition or the boot partition).
Help VERY much appreciated!

Dear Launchpad crew,
I seem to have solved most of my Ubuntu configuration problems.
But one vexing one remains: At all times (even whan I blank the screen), a
rectangular window colored grey with a lighter grey border keeps wandering
around the screen (changing to a different desktop does not get rid of
it). The window has the message "Input not Supported".
It obscures anything behind it -- and is therefore a real annoyance,
Running "ps -aef" lists all running processes -- but none of them seems to
fit this perpetual nuisance.
Help VERY much appreciated!
Thank you very much,
-- Saul

Dear Launchpad crew,
I solved this problem: I re-installed Ubuntu; Thunderbird works perfectly
now.

Well , re-installations is not considered like a solution of a problem , but sometimes solves things.
You can mark the question as solved.
Thanks
