how to recover after rm -r /chroot?

I tried to remove my chroot installation from Ubuntu 8.04 by simply deleting the directory /chroot. This has cause selective damage to my system, deleting entire directories in my ~ but apparently nothing else?

Is there any way to get these directories back? I am quite good at following instructions, even complex ones, I am a computer scientist, after all.

Any help would be great since the files lost were mainly my personal work...

For someone to help you better with file recovery, you must mention your File System in use. Like EXT3, or ReiserFS, etc.

I am using the out of the box ubuntu files system, I believe that is ext3.

Thanks for that *GREAT* tip!

PhotoRec was able to recover an incredible amount of stuff, and even if I didn't get much back, at least it showed what could be recovered!

Once again, Ubuntu and its community have shown that that Humans can be a good to each-other!

That is really uplifting!
