I can't install the rpm package in ubuntu 6.1

Asked by vero

I want to compile fortran90 in my computer, but it's my first time in doing this, and I can't manage to do the first step:

when I write:
sudo apt-get install rpm build-essential

There appear the following problem:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package rpm is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package rpm has no installation candidate

I really don't know how to arrange this. Please, help!!

Thanks for this question.

Ubuntu is debian based and with that uses the debian packaging system. This is different to rpm, which is used by other distributions.

There are 2 ways how you can compile fortran on your computer. You can either install the package gfortran which is a Fortran 99 compiler. This can be done by synaptic and installs all necessary packages. This is probably the preferred method since it is the easiest.

If you have a fortran compiler in rpm format you need to convert the rpm package into a deb package. This can be done with the program alien. However, with this you would need to manually install first all the packages this package depends on, hence it is more difficult to do,

I hope this helps.

Can you help with this problem?
