Try to do this:
1. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
2. Insert and run this command:
sudo synaptic
3. Copy all the output of the terminal here.

I don't know what else I can add about the problem, I am a user of Ubuntu and no expert. Thank you

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): vector:
This is an bug. It writes anywhere, where it is not allowed to do, so the kernel terminate the program. A thing because of common security reason.
The comon way is to use terminal -> "ubuntu-bug synaptic" to report such. But Ubuntu has dropped synaptic support, so it may be that apport tells you that reporting for this software is not possible. In this case you are foced to use software-center or try to get a other version inserted manually from
https:/
Good luck on this(internet search for manually install packages.
By the way: Instead you can also do on terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Thats upgrades your system also.

Why you are calling synaptic from terminal as sudo?
-> You could do the same from ubity desktop. It doing sudo automatically when you start it srom there. and there should be not problem with:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): vector:
Or?

Thank you Melchiaros, I did the Update/Ugrade and Synaptic still not responding. From your comments I understand that Synaptic is no longer used?? I was trying to find out about another problem when Amir suggested I use Synaptic to fix broken packages, but I guess I can't now.

Melchiaros, I used sudo synaptic because Enrico told me to do so to get report. I repeat, I am no expert!

I have ment unity -> the ubuntu default desktop. Don't bother with typos. Time is low.
Q:From your comments I understand that Synaptic is no longer used??
A: Using is your thing, but software center is now preferred.
Have you tried already ubuntu-bug synaptic. Than you will get yor answer.
apt-get should already be able to fix broken packages (option with -f I thing: internt search!)

I do have Synaptic in the launcher but I have the same problem when I start it from there.

OK Melchiaros, Thank you very much for your time and patience. I will wait for Ubuntu 12.04 and hope my original problem will be fixed.

bug #839219: “synaptic crashes immediately on startup with SIGABRT in raise() [Only when accessibility is enabled, e.g. screen reader]”.
disable accessibility, such as screen keyboard, screen reader, etc., all to OFF.
synaptic package manager will then appear and work.

... on the right top panel (on my desktop using gnome 3.2)
there is a Universal Access icon, when you left click on it
about 10 options appear, including Screen Keyboard,
click them all to off.
Click on System Settings found in user icon right most upper panel icon (left click)
choose Universal Access, turn all settings to off.
click on synaptic package manager, it will then appear and work.
If not, uninstall synaptic package manager then reinstall.
If running a Unity desktop it should work the same, except 3 times
more difficult then it has to be. Gnome-shell 3.2 is by far the better
desktop environment.

comments agree with terminal output:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
what(): vector:
synaptic crashes when accessibility is active or enabled
(Screen Keyboard, Screen Reader on)
truly disabling accessibility, clicking all to off, allows synaptic to work. -
(synaptic:3203): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine
in module_path: "pixmap",
perhaps this error may somehow affect synaptic -
find and install the theme engine in module_path: "pixmap".
try synaptic again, and it should work.
if not, perhaps reinstalling oneiric will work.
I doubt that synaptic will be supported any more
in precise then in oneiric.
For ease of use, I still prefer gnome 3 as desktop
environment with gnome-shell & extensions,
& Cairo-Dock-3.00
