what package required to run a video file ending with wmv

Asked by Paul Harshman

I'm new to ubuntu and need to download a package to view this video "file///tmp/SanyoPS.wmv." ( showing an electronic adapter board running a milling machine). I'm guessing that what I need is probably available using the synaptic package manager. can someone help me in picking the correct package
thanks
Paul H

Support for WMV has been bundled into the w32codecs package. It is not available from Ubuntu due to legal restrictions. You can download the package from an unoffical repository and install it with dpkg. Type these lines in the Terminal:

wget -c http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/pool/dapper/i386/non-free/w32codecs/w32codecs_20060611-1plf1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20060611-1plf1_i386.deb

For more information on playing other proprietary formats, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Or you could just click on the first link mentioned above, and click the "Open" button when the download dialog pops up.

Also, you should use Synaptic Package Manager to install totem-xine

I would recomend using plf to get w32codecs:
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/doc/plf

Then to get the default videoplayer in dapper (totem-gstreamer) using these codecs, install the package gstreamer0.10-pitfdll from ubuntu multiverse.
