Could not download all repository indexes in Synaptic Package Manager due lan proxy

In a fresh installation of Lucid Lynx 10.04 I've configured my network proxy settings and it's possible to connect to the internet with firefox.

However when I try to reload in Synaptic Package manager I get: Could not download all repository indexes

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied. )
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/restricted/binary-i386/Packages.gz 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied. )

etc...

I downloaded NTLMAPS from packages.ubuntu.com and entered the appropriate details but the situation is still the same.

If I try to do sudo apt-get install build-essential I also get an error:

paul@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install build essential
[sudo] password for paul:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package build

I think I'm having trouble authenticating with my proxy to connect to get the packages. I'd like to be able to get the synaptic package manager working and to get the build-essential package installed.

You have set the preferences in gnome directly:

I set the preferences in there first, the internet connection worked but the synaptic package manager still does not.

sudo apt-get install build-essential

NONE of the packages have spaces in, thats why the installer couldn't find build ;)

The problem is with the authentication with the proxy, I've managed to create a similar build on a home network with no problems. The only difference here is the proxy.

Hmmn thanks for your help but it's still not authenticating with the proxy.

I was hopeful the part where i supplied my password and log on would have helped but it's not I'm afraid.

i've tried a variety of settings in the Ubuntu Software Center software sources and I can't succesfully "select best server", it comes up with the No Suitable Download Server found, Check your internet connection.

I have checked my internet connection and it works fine with firefox, i can ping locations too. I can't get synaptic package manager or apt-get to authenticate with my proxy.

Please tell try this and report ONLY errors row here:

export http_proy=http://127.0.0.1:3142
sudo apt-get update

Please substitute the export http_proy=http://127.0.0.1:3142 with your real ntlm proxy address...
