Luke,

sun-java is now in the Partner repository!

Step 1 - add partner repo
System / Administration / Software Sources -- Other Software tab -- check "http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner"

Step 2 - update your apt database, press the Reload button after making above change or "sudo apt-get update"

Step 3 - then you should find: sun-java6-jre, sun-java6-jdk and sun-java6-plugin (web plugin)

Good luck,
George

Have the same problem, but in "Other Software" I have only

http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu karmic partner

I checked it on ... nada no Java JRE6.
Switched the other one with (Soruce bla bla) on , nada
The I was fed up and switched them all on ... still nada

I want to change from Windows to Ubuntu ... but frankly said ... I start to become tired with all those formal hurdles. I have the feeling that I only loose time in all this formal overhead.

Hi Marco,

sorry I don't understand what u want to tell me ?

I have switched everything under "Other Software" on and I tried to add
under "Other Software":
"deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid partner" ... it seems to take
this entry, but in realtiy it simply ignores it. ZERO

I have lost a day now for an installation which took me under Windows
without download time max. 10 minutes and its working :
Eclipse 3.5.2, Scala 2.8.0 and Scala IDE

How much will the Linux / Ubuntu overhead cost me on the long run ? Is it
really cost effective to change from windows ?

Sorry, but I'm really stressed with this ...
