stellarium controls greyed out

The controls on Stellarium are just grey oblique boxes. Nothing written in the boxes. Some of the controls will work if clicked but others don't seem to. Using 10.10 64 bit. New to Ubuntu. Have I installed incorrectly? Have installed a couple of times using software centre and terminal. Don't know if this is the correct forum for this type of question but have looked around and can't find anything.
