How to do an update of software installed via ubuntu software center.

I find it rather strange that the ubuntu software center of karmic doesn't have any command to update software made available through it.
Neither can i update the list of available software in ubuntu software center to get the latest version information.

Neither is any of it updated by update-manager.

I'm trying to update "spring lobby" and "spring" (an rts game), and it does say "Canonical does not provide updates for .."

However, this leaves the whole thing kinda broken.
Networked spring doesn't allow outdated clients & lobby's, yet on their website http://springrts.com/wiki/Ubuntu_install, there are no guidelines for karmic upgrading either.

Who do i nag to get this fixed?!

I completely agree with you that Ubuntu updates leave a little to be desired. I believe Canonical only provides updates directly related to the Ubuntu operating system. For example Grub, Linux Kernel updates, gnome updates.

The Ubuntu community provides updates for the other non-operating system related software (Ex: OpenOffice, Firefox). However, the updates are much less frequent. Usually only receiving updates if there is a serious security risk.

The best option for getting more frequent updates is to use a PPA (Personal Package Archive) [https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/add-applications/C/adding-repos.html#adding-ppa}.

The only other option is to download the software directly from the software vendors web site.

You can add a software source manually for particular program and than the package will be updated by Update Manager.
