not genuine ubuntu
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 9.10 from India server. After successful installation, I have tried to install VLC media player from Ubuntu software centre. After finding it in the list, I have clicked the arrow button and there is no install button in the succeeding page. So I thought of reporting a problem from help tab and it said your ubuntu is not genuine, so cant report a problem. What am i suppose to do.

You misunderstand.
For example Firefox is made by Mozilla. It is not made by Canonical/Ubuntu. Therefore Firefox is not a genuine Ubuntu application. There is not much point reporting any problem in Firefox to Canonical/Ubuntu - you need to report it to Mozilla.
Try installing Vlc from the command line.
Connect to the Internet
Open a Terminal
Issue the command: sudo apt-get install vlc

There is not such thing as non-genuine Ubuntu, that's the best part
about Ubuntu. VLC is a third-party application so it conflicts with
Ubuntu, try installing it from command line as it was mentioned before.

Are you sure about that? Doing sudo apt-get install vlc should do the
job, I found that these packages are in the repositories. This is the
result of search:
videolan-doc - documentation for the VideoLAN streaming solution
vlc - multimedia player and streamer
vlc-data - Common data for VLC
vlc-dbg - debugging symbols for vlc
vlc-nox - multimedia player and streamer (without X support)
vlc-plugin-ggi - GGI video output plugin for VLC
vlc-plugin-jack - Jack audio plugins for VLC
vlc-plugin-pulse - PulseAudio plugin for VLC
vlc-plugin-sdl - SDL video and audio output plugin for VLC
vlc-plugin-svgalib - SVGAlib video output plugin for VLC
All of these will be installed, by that command
