how to select several progs at once in the software centre

Asked by Keith Mills

Is it possible to select more than one package for installation in the software center. It seems such a slow unnecessary process having to select one package only, then supply your password every time. Is there a way to sign in as root to make it unnecessary to have to give your password for every package downloaded. The old Add/Remove utility seemed so much better.

Hi Marco, just to say it was a "double click" the reason my question
appeared twice and I have found that if I stay in Software Centre then I
dont need to re-enter my password again but I can not as yet find a way
to select more than one package at a time for installation. I would
appreciate your comments on this.

Cheers Keith Mills

Hi, My question was not regarding Synaptic but regarding the new Software Center. I repeat, is there any way to select more than one package for installation at any one time in the Software Center as there was in the old Add/Remove utility in Ubuntu 9.04

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 today. Everything is very nice and efficient except this feature of Software Centre. In the past, I can select or deselect several software in Add / Remove Applications, go for a cup of tea and everything would be done by the time I come back to my computer.

Now I have to install and remove each and every application in front of the computer and I find that this is the most tedious part of the whole installation process, especially if your internet connection is not very fast.

You could have advised me to use Synaptic, but does this miss the point of creating Software Centre (ie. ease of use, intuitive and Linux jargon-free, especially for absolute beginners). In addition, I thought there are plans to merge Synaptic into Software Centre in the future.

I would like to see that I can select multiple applications to install in Software Centre, hopefully as an update, rather than waiting for 10.04 to be released.

I don't think that will happened because ubuntu doesn't do such updates.Once when release is stable you don't have to wait for updates of that kind.Probably we can see it in one of next releases. But working with synaptic is not that hard( maybe take you couple of days to get use to it) and you can get from it same things as from software center and more.

You can actually select one software from the Ubuntu Software center, proceed to install it, then start to choose an other one from the list (clicking on the tab that says something like "download free softwares") and then select for application, and so on. So the difference is that before you could choose a serie of softwares for installation and preoceed, now you choose one by one to install immediately. You are not obliged to wait for one to finish being installed before starting installing an other one.

I do agree that I preferred the classic old way. But as long as the work gets done, that's OK

Can you help with this problem?
