Boot to root recovery console and set a password. You can configure lightdm to automatically log your user in.

thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I'm unable to make heads or tails of
it. Perhaps this platform is for people who do? I've reinstalled to fix
it.

Well, no, since I'd only recently installed it, I figured it was easiest to
reinstall it. I reset the password so now it seems to be OK. Thanks for
your time :-)

Its not for people who know. Its for users. If you dont know how to do something is it not intelligent to use the Internet to find out how to do it....you reinstaled your OS because of a password which you could have found a how to guide in seconds but because you didnt think, you went ahead and reinstalled the entire OS. Can you not see how ridiculous that sounds. At the very least you could have posted back on here and we would have given you a guide like this one:
