Dropbox has a deb you can install. Why are you runing ./configure ?

Because my Software Center will not let me install or remove anything, and
even GDebi won't install anything either. They both just stopped working. I
think I have a hacker or something.

Thank you. I sort of ran a step before your instructions -- I ran the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 (errored out twice, but 3rd time was the charm). After a reboot, there appeared -- like magic -- a dialog box to finish setting up Dropbox. Also, like magic, the software center started working again. I did try to remove the (Dropbox) version I ran from the gzip file, but I'm not sure if it did or not. The main thing is that Dropbox is working perfectly now.
The same, however, cannot be said for Firestarter. It stopped running altogether. The same app that I placed in the startup applications that worked before the upgrade, now does not. Whether running from the start apps, or from the terminal. No errors, either. Just a pause, then back to the prompt, and the GUI does not start at all. I completely removed the app, then reinstalled. Still nothing. Should I create another FAQ for that one, or is it part of this one?
I appreciate your help very much. Thank you.
