Where can I find downloaded packages for backup?

Asked by Mr. Singh

I am a Ubuntu 11.04 user and I am absolutely new to the linux environment. I want to know that where can I find the software I have downloaded via Ubuntu Software Center? I want the downloaded and installed packages to be backed up so that these should not be downloaded again if I reinstall Ubuntu. Is there anyway to do so?

Sure, you can back up that folder, then restore its contents on the new system. Before backing it up, you might want to run

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get autoclean

which will remove some old files that are no longer current (and which would therefore not be used when reinstalling the software).

And on new installation, just copy all the files you copied under that directory and transfer it on the same directory on your new installation.
