Change where software center installs programs

Asked by Remi K

I want to change where the software center installs new programs. I've got a tiny SSD-disk where ubuntu is installed. How can I change the installation to a different hdd on my system?

The answer is not changing where programmes are installed, the answer is changing where directories are mounted.

In essence, the solution to your problem is mounting /usr/ on another disc but keeping / on your SSD.

Hopefully someone else with more knowledge will explain how to do this, I wouldn't feel happy trying to explain how to do this (if done wrong, it's the kind of thing that accidentally makes all of your data unreadable).

You can symlink the folders on the flash disk to folders on the HDD. The files will appear to be on the SSD but will be really stored on the internal drive.

Can you help with this problem?
