dependancies

Asked by Teodori Serge

Hy,
I have a question about smartmontools dependancies, and I want to see, if it is possible to change something.
Is it possible to install this package without installing postfix?
I need smartmontools on a big data server (about 10GB of storage with Linux RAID5 and LVM2), which only has openssh for system managment and vsftpd so that user can upload and download their files, I don't need postfix!
After googling around I saw lots of people with the same problem, they all say "a bit heavy for just monitoring hard disks".
I would be simplier, if it could work like mdadm, where you can specify a MAILADDR to send a mail or a PROGRAM to be run on an event. For example I use PROGRAM to send /proc/mdstat as mail with sendemail through a bash script. Smartmontools is also capable of executing a script on error or event.

Last I saw something wierd on http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/smartmontools

'$ sudo apt-get install smartmontools --no-install-recommends' will install the smartmontools without the recommended packages that come with it.

Can you help with this problem?
