Hi I have recently upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 and then to 11.10 and everything is running fine apart from Skype. I have found the app and launched it from the Dash Home button. It appears to open normally but there is no connectivity. I have checked some of the Ubuntu message boards and tried uninstalling then reinstalling sykpe - this has no effect. One other suggestion was to run from the terminal using sudo -i sykpe command. This works fine and skype has full connectivity. I am happy using the terminal but would prefer to get the desktop button working. Any ideas? Thanks Jonnie

Sudo is not suitable for GUI apps and you will break your OS.

I suggest you rename your skype profile folder which is a hidden folder in $HOME. When you then run the app you can resetup the app and it may work

Thanks very much for getting back to me. I am afraid that I am not very experienced with computer commands. Can you explain how I find my skype profile and rename my skype profile folder (what should I call it? )

I have tried typing HOME into the terminal after the $ prompt and all I get is ' HOME: command not found'

HOME isn't a command, its a variable. If you run (as I give it):

echo $HOME

you will see your user's home folder. Others include:

$USER
$EDITOR
$PATH

Let's do this the easy way (You said you were happy using the terminal so assumed you were ok with commands and such but I wil advise as I normally do).

If you run:

ls -a $USER

What is output?

Hi there - than you for being so patient

echo $HOME

gives me
/home/jj

ls -a $USER

gives me
ls: cannot access jj: No such file or directory

Having said all that I have in fact now sorted out the Skype problem - I found that the skype was not online so although it was opening that was why I could not get it to work. So problem solved but I am interested in understanding more about terminal commands - do you know if there are any online tutorials? Thanks very much Jonnie
