skype echoes whatever said

when I use Skype, everything is repeated in the background.
I have tried altering sound devices and asked Skype (useless!)
Any ideas?

Well, I seem to have solved that bit (doh! I had 2 versions running at once)
Now I can hear my own voice - sort of, but it is at high speed and two octaves higher

Close skype and run:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*; mv ~/.Skype~/.Skype_old

Wait 10 seconds and reboot, then rerun SKype.

Can you also give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy skype
