Kubuntu 11.10. Skype makes me sound like "Donald Duck" no funny comments!?!?!

Asked by Tim Fowler

1) I have installed Ubuntu 11:04 the gui was too slow and unstable but everything worked ok until I upgraded to 11:10
2) I then installed Kubuntu 11:04 but the gui was just as unstable, but I do like the single mouse click. BUT Skype did not work.
3) I re installed Kubuntu 11:10 (not an upgrade) and it was ok BUT still no movie player to play my legitimate movies and still no Skype.
4) I got the movies working from the web suggestions.
5) I re installed Kubuntu and tried again with the movies (ok) BUT still no Skype
6) After much stuffing around I have skype working enough to make me sound like "Donald Duck" or was it daffy duck??
7)

8) I have used Linux exclusively in my small business since '95
9) Linux has progressed very far but recently seems to have lost sight of the fact that business needs
A) Office suite. OK
B) Internet. OK
C) Communications. NOT OK. Skype saves me a lot in telephone bills
D) A backup that works could not make nepamunk to work so installed sbackup
E) Printing fax copier scanner. OK, only use HP gear
F) Business planner / Projects ... several good ones but I still have to load "planner"
G) Movies. NOT OK I still have to stuff about with the codecs
H) AS well as the legendary Linux stability, the more geeky it gets the less stability
Sorry guys but after 16 years these things should happen straight out of the box

As always if there is anything I can do to help please sing out I also want to install (K) Ubuntu on my new Toshiba satellite P750 i7 as soon as my uni exams are finished.
Cheers Tim

Andrew, mate,

I have scourged skype several times and re installed it, I am not a new skype user I have money, credit, on the telephone calls don't want to loose that by becoming a new user
Stuffed around quite a bit getting the sound to work in the first instance

I guess it sounds as though my voice is sped up the words are there but everything seems to be running faster. At first I thought the Echo sound test tape was running fast in replay but I did not make sense to a mate I rang so it is at my end

Mate,

I am a 16 year Linux user my comments above are looking at Linux from the stand point of a disgruntled windows user who has tried K Ubuntu out of sheer frustration.
Your competition .... My new windows laptop from Toshiba does everything that I need as a normal user straight out of the box.
I normally leave the windows on the computer and dual or triple boot. Skype installed onto my amd no problems.
My stable Linux is Debian Lenny very soon I will upgrade to squeezy and make that my new stable Linux unless of course I can get Kubuntu or ubuntu working satisfactorily, failing that I will go back to gentoo for the hell of it

Kubuntu is not much use as a windows replacement when a user cannot skype or play movies or set up a backup or use the internet. but A planning tool may not be critical to some offices.

I like the firefox symbol that leads directly to an online installation.
Could this be done for some of these other applications that I have mentioned in my second set of comments??

Did you make a new user to test?

Andrew,
1) Can we keep this problem open for a few weeks?
2) This funny voice was the reason I re installed kubuntu again
3) Now I am getting signals that sbackup does not have enough room to do the backup (wrong plenty of room)
4) Red hat went a bit funny like that in about 2002.
5) I had tried several reinstalls in the same partition and I did not get it running well until I changed the geometry of the partition and re installed it
6) I figured it was not properly reformating the partition and was getting file corruption.
7) Something is weird but I must study for my uni exam and not play with Linux!?!?!
Your last question
I made a new Skype user in my windows box several weeks ago not in this current kubuntu skype
This is what I have done to get this far
sudo apt-get --purge remove skype This one is done twice and it has been reinstalled twice
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo apt-get install libdbus-1-3:i386
sudo apt-get install libqt4-gui:i386
sudo apt-get install libqt4-core:i386
sudo apt-get install libxss1:i386
sudo apt-get install totem-xine libxinel-ffmpeg libdvdread3

I have also installed firefox and sbackup and that is it. the last kubuntu install was on monday

Cheers mate
