what is the code for installing skype in ubuntu 11.04

i have had skype in ubuntu 10.04 and it worked fine. after my upgrade to ubuntu 11.04 i can only here others speak but they cannot here me. also my sound recorder says it's recording, but nothing comes out of the speakers. and i get this message "Failed to execute child process "vumeter" (No such file or directory)" when i try to open recording level monitor.
please tell me the command to get this fixed. my terminal awaits. thanks.

Hello,

Check the sound settings and make sure that it is not muted. Also check sound settings in Skype.

the problem isn't just a skype thing, it is system wide, as no microphone work.
