getting a webcam running and how to install skype

Asked by Ted Jensen

Howdy folks,

How do I get a webcam running on ubuntu? I just made a clean install of 10.10, and this capacity didn't seem to follow me. (I formated the OS's partition, while keeping /home on another.

I think I went with something like guvc, but I also read of easycam. I'm not afraid of a terminal, if you can help me to know what to ask my system in order to get this squared away.

I know the device works fine under windows.

Can a person skype on ubuntu?

Please install the cheese software from Applications→Ubuntu software center and please play with your devicet...

To install Skype from repositories (suggested):

First please enable the partner repository from menu: System→Administration→Update Manager
press to the lower left settings button, then choose "Other software" enable the "partner" repository and confirm the reload of the packages index

Then please install skype from Applications→Ubuntu software center

Thx, marco. You described a quite pleasant tour for me of my new facilities, in particular the software center. I got cheese and skype. and the video works but the sound doesn't on both of them. Meanwhile, the sound is fine on windows for skype and the logitech 210 windows suite.

Also, the link to others who had already been where I now tread was also informative.

How do I assess my sound capabilities and get them squared away? My speakers work, so the problem isn't that.

Look under system/preferences/sound input tab for the microphone setup. Make sure it not muted. You should get a volume bar of what the microphone picks up. Look at hardware, you may have multiple choices for mics, try them all.

Can you help with this problem?
