Howto install Skype...

I am new to Ubuntu and am trying to get Skype but can't seem to get it right. Any suggeations?

I am trying to download Skype. I have tried the Linux options on the Skype website and one from this forum. I keep getting error messages. I have a Skype account set up in MS XP Pro which works really well so would like to set it up in Ubuntu as well. Any suggestionson how to get it right?

And if you try installing skype via command line?
Open a Terminal (Applications » Accessories » Terminal) and type:

sudo apt-get install skype

Hi Ricardo - been trying to figure out how to apply your suggestion but I'm not used to Ubuntu.....literally been using it for a few hours. Could you you explain maybe in greater detail how I should go about this? Thanks

Simon,
No problem with that. I'll try to explain more detail now. Just tell me if you don't understand something.
When you want to install an application, you have three options for doing that:

1. Software Center
If you like the GUI (Graphical User Interface) way, go to Applications » Software Center in the main menu (default at the top of the screen). When the window appear, type Skype in the search box at the top right of the window and then click over the result. In that screen click on the Install button and the program will do the rest.

2. Synaptics
Another GUI way is install the application via Synaptics (System » Administration » Synaptic). In the same way as in previous, type Skype in the search box at the top right of the window and then do a right click over the result and select "Mark for installation". Then go to the tool bar and click on "Apply" to begin installing the application.

3. Command Line
As I explained above, to install an application using the command line, you must know the name of the application. Therefore, to install Skype you have to open a Terminal (Applications » Accessories » Terminal) and type

sudo apt-get install skype

Then you must enter the password of your session (as you write, it does not appear on the screen) and press enter. Then type "y" (without the double quotes) and enter again to start the installation.

That's all, you only have to do one of three options to install the application. If you haven't understood something just tell me.

I forgot to mention that you need to activate the repositories, better not listen to me. Follow the instructions on the website. Much simpler.
