Shotwell does not open photo selected, but with thumbnails left in

try f-spot

I'm a little confused by your description. Could you describe this in a sequence of steps, perhaps with screenshot(s)?

I believe actionparsnip is referring to F-spot photo manager. Applications--Ubuntu Software Center--Graphics--Photography-- install F-Spot Photo Manager

When I first updated to UBUNTU 10.1 Shotwell became the default photo
opener. When I double click on any saved thumbnail, it would be opened in
Shotwell. I am not sure when that changed but I think that at one point I
used Shotwell to either store pictures downloaded in F-Spot, or I imported
directly into Shotwell. Around that time I started to have trouble. The
trouble I had was that if I double clicked on a thumbnail Shotwell would
open with whatever thumbs were in it, but the photo I had selected was not
there. I removed any thumbs in Shotwell, but then all that appeared was a
Shotwell screen with a grey box, no photo.

I can open a selected photo by right clicking on it, and the option box
offers first choice open with Shotwell which gives the same result a grey
shotwell screen, but if I drop to the open with option open the box and
drop to Shotwell it works as it should.

If I use the arrows at the bottom right of the Shotwell I can select next,
or previous pictures while I am still in Shotwell the next / previous
picture comes up, but if I go out, I have to use the full procedure to get
another picture to open.

I cannot think of anything else.

So if we understand correctly, you're saying that when you open a photo in Nautilus, it's causing Shotwell to open in "library mode" and just show the contents of your pictures library, rather than displaying the photo you clicked on. Is that correct?

If so, it's an issue of file associations. What Nautilus needs to do is run the command
shotwell [photo]

Instead, it's just running
shotwell

I'm not certain how your system would have done that; perhaps it's a Nautilus bug. Here's my guess as to how to solve the problem.
* Right click on a photo
* Click Open With->Other application
* Click "use a custom command"
* Type in '/usr/bin/shotwell'
* Check "Remember this application"
* Click Open

Now the photo will open in Shotwell, rather than displaying your Shotwell library. Assuming you selected "Remember this application," it should do this from now on.
