How to make pictures smaller

While viewing the photo in Shotwell, go to File > Export..., and in the Export Photo dialog box, you can decrease the quality and/or size of the photo, which will reduce the size of the file.

If that doesn't give you enough control, you can open your pictures with the GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) and re-save them with many more options. This also allows you to convert them from one file format to another.

TIFF is usually smaller than RAW (or BMP). JPEG is usually smaller than TIFF. PNG is usually smaller than TIFF. For photographs, PNG sometimes doesn't preserve enough quality to be worth using. There are many other formats besides these five, of course. And in many cases you can greatly scale up the compression (sometimes greatly scaling down the quality) without changing the format.

If you're using Shotwell 0.8, there's an easier way:

1. Select the photos you want to mail.
2. Choose File->Send To.
3. Choose a scaling contraint (e.g. "Width" or "Height"), then a number of pixels.
4. Press OK.
5. In the Send To dialog, select "Email" as the destination.

Note that this will work only if you're using an email client program such as Thunderbird or Evolution. If you want to upload photos to a web-based email service using a browser, you'll need to export manually as the previous poster suggested.
