my computer has locked me out, need to reset my password

my ubuntu programme has changed the password on my user without my knowledge and now i cant acess all my files ect. how do i change my password without knowing the old one?

Well , its obvious that something else happened.. Ubuntu not changes passwords randomly.. Only you or someone else (with privileges) can do that.

it deffinatley was neither me or my dad and were the only ones that know the password .... and now it wont let me into the recovery mode? the other ones work (when u push esc or f1 or wateva) but only recovery mode wont work ? why would it be doing this

During PC boot , keep pressing (hold down) [SHIFT] key until grub menu appears.. then choose the [Recovery Mode] and proceed as per instructions.

Is this a regular installation (from CD/DVD) or you installed Ubuntu from within Windows (wubi) ?
