Ubuntu 12.04 login screen

Help. I am a recent convert to Ubuntu and have just upgraded to 12.04. The login screen has changed and I can no longer log into Ubuntu. I used to enter just a password but am now presented with a box with a head & shoulders, and a box with a lock. I assume the lock is for the password, but what is the other box for. I have tried to enter all that I can think of, but with no luck. Help.

I'm not really sure what you are saying. The login screen on bootup simply offers your login, any other accounts and a guest account. Normally, all you need is your password. The box you describe seems to me to be the system settings->user accounts application. Tell me what you see after re-booting. What you should be seeing is a box to the left of the screen with your account name at the top and below that a box with the cursor and the word 'Password'. That is where you type your normal password. Below that you should see 'Guest Session' and below that any other accounts you have set up. The head and shoulders you mention is in one or two of the settings apps. Are you opening one of those?

Hi to all those who have offered help. It seems that the screen I saw when first starting 12.04 was a new screen that did not appear in 11.10 the version I started with. I tinkered around with various combinations of name and password, and eventually found the right one, and now I am a happy man, although 12.04 seems to be a bit bug ridden. It has found about 3 bugs so far that have been reported back by itself. Impressive.
